Draft Legislation: Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate Act

Preamble

WHEREAS digital literacy is essential for participation in the modern economy and society; AND WHEREAS access to digital skills and knowledge empowers individuals and communities to thrive in a connected world; AND WHEREAS Canada recognizes the importance of fostering digital equity across all regions and demographics; AND WHEREAS it is desirable to dedicate a period to raise awareness, celebrate achievements, and promote initiatives in digital literacy; THEREFORE, His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Short Title

This Act may be cited as the Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate Act.

2. Throughout Canada, in each and every year, the month of March is to be known as "Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate."

Overview

Bill S-202 establishes the position of Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate, an officer of the Library of Parliament. The purpose of this position is to promote the arts in Canada, increase public awareness, and reflect the diversity of the nation's artistic landscape. The bill also includes amendments to correct a reference to the Canada Council for the Arts in the English version of the Parliament of Canada Act.
